Writing Sample - Biography of Mike Turner

What word should be used to describe Mike Turner in lieu of his humble beginnings? Refreshing. At the prime age of 24, born in Waukegan, IL, and the 4th child of six siblings, he is clear about his passion, purpose and role in life. More importantly, he understands and welcomes the responsibility of family and the community. Between the firm love of his mother and the consistent quality time spent with his grandmother, he acquired the insight to learn from other's successes and failures. Considered one of the greatest football players of Northern Illinois University, his track record to date in the position of Running Back has proven him to be an invaluable asset to any team. After a productive 4 years with the San Diego Chargers, March 2, 2008 marks the date he officially became a member of the Atlanta Falcons.

Standing 5 ft 10 in and weighing 237 pounds his natural born talents do not stop with his phenomenal athletic ability in football. In his adolescence, he began developing his skill in drawing and his love for literacy. Richard Wright, author of Black Boy succeeded in leaving an impression on the importance of reading in the adolescent years of Turner. Despite the geographical and generational differences between Wright and Turner, both were conscious of the conditions of the environment in which they were raised. Wright replied that he wanted to "give [his] tongue to voiceless Negro boys." Turner is a young man very aware of his voice wanting to give opportunity to the less fortunate of his community in Chicago as well as Atlanta. Currently, Turner is establishing a non-profit organization that plans target the issue of illiteracy among African American male teenagers.

He considers one of the responsibilities of a man is “to uplift” while considering the plight of man as simple. It is his definition of a woman as supportive, beautiful and delicate that speaks of a tenderness in character that may not being observed on the football field. This tenderness is a genetic trait within his family as he shares his belief in the reinvestment of time and energy in children with siblings that are also child advocates.

In quiet moments of relaxation, it is the music of artist Anthony Hamilton, Raphael Saadiq and Kindred Family that helps Turner to rejuvenate and allot the mental space to look inward and affirm. He acknowledges himself as a child of God and has a child of his own which he actively participates in the development of his son.
